Scheda sentiero
One of the most scenic and renowned coastal hikes in eastern Liguria, suspended between Mediterranean scrub and cliffs dropping steeply into the sea.
The itinerary starts at the western end of Levanto Bay in the locality of Vallesanta. The trail immediately begins a steep climb along a stone stairway, leaving the small harbour and the last houses behind. It rapidly gains elevation and enters fragrant Mediterranean scrub, rich in maritime pines, strawberry trees, holm oaks and caper plants clinging to the rocks.
Upon reaching the saddle of the promontory, the view opens freely across 180 degrees of the Ligurian Sea: to the east, hikers can admire Levanto beach and the entire outline of the Cinque Terre as far as the Portovenere promontory, while to the west the view begins to open over the coast of Framura. The route continues at mid-slope, alternating level sections with short climbs and descents over unpaved and rocky terrain, passing fences belonging to historic rural properties.
The second part of the itinerary develops in a steady and pleasant descent towards the Bonassola valley. The trail gradually enters a cooler and shadier wood, crossing small streams on wooden footbridges before joining the typical paved creuse that end directly in the heart of Bonassola, a few steps from its characteristic crescent-shaped beach.
The trail is very popular, well marked and has no mountaineering or exposed passages. However, the surface is typical hiking terrain: loose gravel, irregular rock steps and exposed roots require care, especially on descents, to avoid sprains. In strong south-westerly winds or after recent rain, rocks and stone stairways may become slippery. Hiking or trail-running shoes with a lugged sole are recommended. Carry water during the summer months.
