Pietre Rosse - Volturara - Rovereto (REL trail marker)

The itinerary starts from Pietre Rosse, a secondary ridge area named after the jasper and ophiolitic rocks with their characteristic reddish colour, typical of this section of the Ligurian coast. The trail joins an old local path developing mainly at mid-slope and offering broad views over the open sea.

The first section crosses areas once intensively cultivated, where dry-stone walls support small olive groves and patches of tall Mediterranean scrub, including broom, strawberry tree and maritime pine. The route then reaches Volturara, an old cluster of farmhouses and partially restored rural buildings, evidence of the agricultural economy of the past.

Beyond Volturara, the path alternates short climbs and level sections, crossing small cooler wooded hollows before opening again onto the terraces preceding the arrival at Rovereto. This small and charming hillside village, with its colourful houses and peaceful atmosphere, is the perfect conclusion to the itinerary and offers convenient pedestrian connections towards the centre of Levanto or the beaches of Bonassola.

The trail is well defined and presents no technical difficulties or exposed passages. The surface is mixed, with beaten earth and stone-paved sections near the villages. Take care in the more shaded and damp woodland areas, where leaves and stones can become slippery after recent rainfall. Hiking shoes or trail-running shoes with a lugged sole are recommended.
