Scheda sentiero
A wild ridge itinerary linking the grassy plateau of Pian Pontasco to the evocative rocky formations and panoramic summit of Monte Grumo.
The itinerary starts from the evocative plateau of Pian Pontasco, an extensive grassy clearing surrounded by beech woods and pine trees and historically used by local communities as a junction for transhumance. After leaving the meadow, the trail joins the mountain ridge and proceeds westwards and north-westwards.
The landscape is characterised by a striking contrast: on one side, dense woodland covers the cooler north-facing slopes; on the other, high-altitude heathland and mountain Mediterranean scrub colonise the seaward slopes. As Monte Grumo approaches, the ground begins to reveal the typical geology of the Bracco area, with spectacular outcrops of serpentinite and red jasper. The trail climbs with a moderate but steady gradient until it reaches the summit area of Monte Grumo at 651 metres above sea level. From this exceptional natural balcony, the view extends through 360 degrees, embracing both the broad horizon of the Ligurian Sea and the entire ridge line of the Ligurian Apennines descending towards the Val di Vara.
The route develops over mixed terrain of beaten earth, scree and exposed rock. It presents no mountaineering difficulties or exposed sections, but loose gravel, characteristic of the rocks around Monte Grumo, requires care to avoid slipping, especially when descending. As an exposed ridge route, it is subject to strong winds and sudden banks of sea fog, known locally as "macaia", which can reduce visibility to zero within minutes. Hiking boots with a rigid sole and good wind protection are recommended.
