Scheda sentiero
A woodland ridge and mid-slope traverse linking evocative mountain plateaus and historic rural settlements in the Levanto hinterland.
The itinerary starts from the broad grassy saddle of Pian delle Rose, a ridge area historically used for grazing at an elevation of more than 500 metres. The first section descends gently inside dense woodland of chestnut trees and oaks, leading hikers towards Moggia, a small and isolated cluster of rural houses retaining the charm of traditional farming architecture in the La Spezia hinterland.
Beyond Moggia, the trail enters dense vegetation again and starts climbing beside small mountain streams. It reaches Pian della Madonna, another wooded plateau whose name is linked to historic votive shrines and local legends, an ideal shaded place for a break.
The final section continues at mid-slope with moderate gradients, alternating planted pine woods with areas of tall Mediterranean scrub. The trail ends in the locality of Baracca, an important historic passage point on State Road 1 Aurelia near Passo del Bracco. From here, several links lead towards the Val di Vara hiking network and the coastal trails descending to Deiva Marina and Moneglia.
The route develops mainly on unpaved terrain, with leaves in the undergrowth and loose gravel in the more exposed areas. It presents no technical difficulties or exposed sections. During wetter seasons or after heavy rainfall, the flatter areas, including Pian della Madonna, may accumulate mud and water, making the ground heavy and slippery. Hiking shoes with a lugged sole are recommended.
