Scheda sentiero
An ancient pilgrimage route climbing through Monterosso's vertical vineyards to the wooded Il Termine pass on the ridge.
The itinerary starts in the heart of the historic centre of Monterosso al Mare. Leaving the level narrow streets behind, it joins the old mule track climbing steeply towards the hinterland. The first part of the route develops through a spectacular landscape shaped by human activity: a stone stairway winds among the famous dry-stone walls and the vertical vineyards of the Begasti locality, where the renowned Sciacchetrà wine is produced. From this section, the view opens over Monterosso Bay and Punta Mesco.
As the trail gains elevation and leaves cultivated plots behind, the landscape changes radically. The stone mule track gives way to an unpaved trail and Mediterranean vegetation is replaced by cool, shaded woodland dominated by chestnut trees, holm oaks and maritime pines. The steady and demanding climb continues until it reaches the Il Termine saddle at 508 metres above sea level. This pass is a very important hiking and road junction: here the trail joins the Strada Provinciale della仁 and crosses the Alta Via delle Cinque Terre (trail 591), offering the possibility of continuing towards the Sanctuary of Soviore or descending on the opposite side towards the Val di Vara.
The trail has a considerable elevation gain concentrated within a short distance, requiring good cardiovascular fitness and physical endurance. The first section consists of high and irregular stone steps that may become very slippery in rain or high humidity. There are no exposed or technical passages, but because of the steady gradient, hiking shoes with a lugged sole and telescopic poles are strongly recommended to protect the joints. Carry an adequate water supply.
