Scheda sentiero
A wild ridge itinerary crossing the high-altitude grasslands of Pian Pontasco and linking the summit of Monte Gaggi to provincial road SP 64.
The itinerary develops in an environment radically different from the coast, despite being only a short distance from the sea as the crow flies. The trail branches off from the main ridge near Monte Gaggi and heads west through a mountain landscape dominated by vegetation, with beech woods alternating with planted pine woods and broad heathlands close to the rocky ridges.
The central and most characteristic section of the route crosses the Pian Pontasco plateau. Situated at more than 600 metres above sea level, this grassy clearing surrounded by woodland was historically used by local communities for grazing and transhumance. Beyond the plateau, the trail continues in a gentle and steady descent along the slope, offering broad views over the Val di Vara and, on the clearest days, the summits of the Ligurian Apennines. The route ends where it meets the asphalt of SP 64, a strategic rest point for road connections or for continuing the hike towards the nearby Monte Serro and Passo del Bracco area.
The route develops on unpaved trail and meadow tracks. It presents no technical difficulties or exposed passages. However, as this is an Apennine ridge route, the area is subject to sudden weather changes and the formation of the typical "macaia", dense fog rising from the sea, which may drastically reduce visibility and make orientation difficult across open grassland. Follow the trail markers carefully and carry a windproof jacket and hiking shoes with a lugged sole.
