Sanctuary of Our Lady of Reggio - Il Termine (REL trail marker 582 / former 8B)

Descrizione

The route starts from the monumental, shaded square of the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Reggio, famous for its cypress, the oldest in Liguria at around 800 years of age, and for its historic spring-water fountain. Following the REL 582 trail marker, hikers first gain a short stretch of height toward Provincial Road 63.

After walking for around 350 metres along the edge of the paved road, where care is required, the route turns sharply left onto a comfortable unpaved farm road. From here there is an extraordinary aerial view over the village of Vernazza, the Punta Mesco promontory and the Ligurian Sea. As the steady climb continues, the Mediterranean scrub gradually gives way to cooler woodland dominated by chestnut trees and holm oaks. The trail follows the shape of the mountain until it reaches the Il Termine saddle at around 500 metres above sea level. This location is a key junction in the National Park trail network: trail 582 ends here at its intersection with trail 591, the Cinque Terre High Route and upper ridge variant, from which it is easy to continue either toward the Sanctuary of Soviore in Monterosso or toward Val di Vara.

The route has a mixed surface, alternating paved sections on the initial connection with dirt track and mule path. It has no major technical difficulties, exposed passages or equipped sections. Care is nevertheless required along the short stretch beside the provincial road. In damp seasons or after heavy rain, dry leaves and the clay soil in the woods can be slippery; trekking shoes with a lugged sole are always recommended.
