Trail 544: Junction 553 - Redescavo - Sella di Faggiona

Trail 544, historically recorded as former route 50c, is a forest and mountain link in the municipality of Borghetto di Vara, close to the boundary with the Pignone area.

The route starts as a branch from the junction with trail 553, the well-known hiking route linking the historic villages of Cassana and Faggiona along the Via dei Monti and the itineraries associated with karst phenomena. Leaving the main trail, it climbs the wooded ridge, passes close to Punta Perina and continues through the woodland around Monte Redescavo.

The environment is typical of the mid-altitude Apennines of La Spezia, dominated by dense chestnut woods and isolated unpaved forest roads. The path continues along the ridge, alternating gentle slopes and nearly level sections, until it reaches Sella di Faggiona, the mountain pass above the village of Faggiona at approximately 440 metres above sea level. From here it is possible to reconnect with trails leading towards Monte Bardellone.

Official management and maintenance notice: according to the latest update of the official Liguria Region trail register, Resolution dGR 757/2023, this route is temporarily suspended from the map until a new maintenance operator is identified.

• Horizontal trail markers in the field, including the usual red-and-white signs, and clearance of fallen branches or shrubs may not be guaranteed.
• It is essential to use a GPS device with offline maps, such as OpenStreetMap, for navigation.
• Wear stable hiking boots with a lugged sole: the unpaved forest surface tends to accumulate heavy mud and a thick layer of slippery leaves during wet months or after rainfall.
• There are no drinking-water sources along the entire wooded ridge. Carry a full water supply before leaving the villages of Cassana or Faggiona.
